Edible or food plants are a good option to have in our windows or kitchens when preparing various recipes.

There is a wide variety of food or culinary plants that can help us in the stews we make in our kitchen. Next we make a compilation with the essentials of each kitchen. But first we remember some basic tips about edible plants: use natural or organic fertilizers, because we will eat them later, and make the most of the space, as with vertical gardens of aromatic plants.

Chamomile

Its flowers are similar to daisies and appear in early summer. When the flowering is in the last ones, the base leaves turn yellow, but they will regain their vigor when transplanted. As a medicinal plant, chamomile is considered a good food plant for digestion and anti-inflammatory.

Peppermint or mint

Within the mint family there are many varieties. If you want to grow them, use different containers. You can keep the leaves for the winter in the freezer, when the plant has died. This edible plant reproduces by rhizomes and needs enough volume of soil to make it lustrous.

Balm

The lemon balm is highly appreciated for making relaxing teas and aromatherapy. As a medicinal plant, it highlights its relaxing and toning properties of the nervous system, which is used to treat anxiety, depression, nervous tension and the digestive discomforts they generate. To make the lemon balm aroma more intense, place the plants in full sun.

Rosemary

It is a kitchen classic. If we want to grow rosemary at home it is very simple and also does not require much care. It is very resistant, even to severe winters, and we have to water it moderately. Furthermore, this edible plant is also highly valued as a medicinal plant.

Thyme

It needs a lot of sun and is another classic among food plants. Its aroma is known to everyone, as is its use in stews. This plant has multiple medicinal properties since it is antiseptic, digestive stimulant, antirheumatic and prevents anemia among other properties.

Parsley

Parsley, along with rosemary and oregano are the most widely used herbs for cooking, although it is not their only attraction. It should be placed in partial shade and we will harvest it throughout the year. Place a pot of parsley near the kitchen door to keep it close at hand. You will not regret!

Basil

Basil is an ideal culinary plant to have at home. Apart from the aroma and flavor it provides to recipes, it has the power to scare away mosquitoes. It should be kept in a sunny place, although when it is very intense, better in semi-shade, pay it once a month and keep the soil moist.

Oregano

Oregano leaves are a basic dressing in Mediterranean cuisine, either fresh or dry, where they have more flavor. Grow it in pots with well-drained soil in a sunny place and after harvest let it dry to use later, for example in pizzas.

Strawberries

If we grow strawberries at home, we will enjoy them much more. In addition, there are several containers to grow them easily and we can have various varieties of this delicious plant. We will only have to put them in the sun and use an organic fertilizer such as liquid guano, for example.
